Diagnosis of diabetes

Type 1A diabetes - autoimmune destruction of pancreatic beta cells. Type 1B Diabetes - no insulin, no autoimmunity, no other cause. Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults (LADA) - patients diagnosed with DM but dont require insulin until later on in the progression of the disease, may have antibodies. ?Utility of ordering GAD/ICA to determine progression to insulin dependence risk for DKA.


To determine types of Diabetes - these labs may be ordered

Islet Cell Antibodies(ICA), Glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD) 65, Anti-insulin, Tyrosine phosphatase, Insulinoma Associated Protein 2 (IA-2), IA-2-Beta, Zinc transporter (ZnT8).
Absence of these does not rule out type 1, may still have type 1 b.
